Drew Baldridge - Soulful and Smooth
Drew Baldridge released his full-length debut album, Dirt on Us, June 10th. This upbeat, soulful, and methodical album features 13 songs, 11 of which he helped write. The title track was written about his friends and growing up in a small town. He is still best friends today with the classmates he had in kindergarten and wanted to write a song about how they grew up and life in a small town. ‘When I play “Dirt on Us” I get goose bumps and think wow this is real and it is my story,’ Drew says.
From Patoka, Illinois, a small town of 600, Drew is enjoying life in Nashville. Five years after his arrival in Nashville, the up-and-coming artist made his Opry debut this year on June 15th with 20 family members celebrating with him. In fact Josh Turner, one of his heroes, surprised Drew by singing with him on stage “Your Man” during his debut. Drew says, “On my 18th birthday, my mom gave me concert tickets to see Josh Turner at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville and he is one of the main reasons I am now in Nashville today.”
‘Funktry’ can describe Drew’s style of music, a funk and country mix. He wanted to create music that was different from everyday country music. “Dance With Ya” has that catchy beat and groove, “Train” is very soulful and smooth, and “It Is Well With My Soul,” an inspiring old hymn sung from the heart, will leave you in tears.
Drew is a true performer full of contagious energy and he’s got the moves and grooves to prove it. When Drew was in second grade he performed Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in talent shows with his friends, white glove and all. He also started singing at a young age with the church choir. ‘Miss Anita would play the piano and I would sing. It was where I learned to sing,’ Drew said. Fans were not disappointed at the CMA Music Festival this year as Drew commanded the stage while he sang and danced with his band on stage. Fans could feel the energy!
“It takes a lot of hard work and big dreams and I am starting to see some of the fruits of my labor now. You can do anything you want to when you set your mind to it!” Drew says. He and his band will be traveling across the country this summer playing at festivals and out on radio tour, but he always travels with a piece of home. He wears a necklace with the coordinates of his Patoka house engraved on the state of Illinois medallion.
“I love the fact that there are so many creative people here in Nashville. It’s a great Christian community full of young people that want to learn about music and god. Midtown has a lot happening, but when I’m here I really like to stay in and relax because I’m on the road so much.” – Drew Baldridge
