Ivey Cake Designer Sweets
If you have ever wanted to be a ‘Beach Bum,’ can’t stand your ‘Crazy Ex,’ or decided you are tired of being a ‘People Pleaser,’ then it’s time for a tasting at Ivey Cake where you will discover these delicious uniquely named cupcakes where everything is made from scratch!
Ivey Cake started with a simple dream in 1999, when Ivey Childers entered the ‘real world’ after college. Childers did not have a baking background, but took a stab at a couple recipes in her tiny apartment kitchen. It was a two year process of trial and error, but with fortitude she spent most of her free time experimenting in the kitchen with recipes and her own ideas that lead to many of her unique cake flavors.
The most remarkable experience during this quest, came when Childers was trying to figure out how to make a great strawberry cake. After several unsuccessful attempts, she went to bed frustrated and literally dreamt step by step how to make it. “To this day, my strawberry cake is made just as I dreamt it and is one of the most requested cakes on the menu,” Childers says.
In the early days of her business, Childers received a call from The Picnic in Belle Meade asking if she would make cakes and cupcakes for them as a wholesale account. From that point, she went out and rented a commercial kitchen and started supplying The Picnic her sweet treats. ‘They made me kick off my business and are still a customer today,” Childers commented.
While Childers was hosting a baby shower for her sister at The Mercantile in downtown Franklin, the owner asked if she would like to sell her cupcakes in a little space she had available. “That’s when it really started. I did everything myself from the baking to the icing, and the retail,” Childers said. After more than 10 years in Franklin, Ivey Cake closed the Franklin location and reopened in Brentwood late 2017. The new Brentwood location offers everything she needed in one location - retail space, as well as, a full commercial kitchen with plenty of free parking so it was the perfect fit.
Childers is married to Carrie Underwood’s bassist and when they started dating, he introduced her to Underwood. The two formed a strong friendship and have been best friends since. In fact Childers had the honor of being a bridesmaid and also making Underwood’s wedding cake featuring two round cakes-at top and bottom-and six tiers of cupcakes in Carrie’s favorite flavor (vanilla with vanilla buttercream frosting) appropriately named the ‘I Do’ cupcake.
There is a story behind each cupcake name and Childers says they are all good of course, but here are her top three flavors:
- Crazy Ex – Banana walnut with cream cheese frosting topped with a banana chip and was Childers’ wedding cake flavor.
- People Pleaser – Carrot, walnut, raisin with cream cheese frosting. This is everyone’s favorite, even if you don’t typically like carrot cake thus a people pleaser.
- Buzz Off – Coffee cream filled chocolate with whipped mocha frosting dipped in ganache, named appropriately for the ‘buzz’ of the caffeine and one of the few that has a filling.
Whether you are looking for the texture and nuttiness of the ‘People Pleaser’ or rich and decadent like the ‘Buzz Off’ you will certainly find your favorite flavor to savor. They are truly the best cupcakes made from the best ingredients!
As a busy entrepreneur, wife of a musician, a mom of one with a baby on the way, Childers does find time to enjoy the Nashville area with her husband and friends. A few of her favorite things to do in historic downtown Franklin are walking around, shopping, and having lunch at Grays on Main. As far as downtown Nashville goes Childers enjoys dinner at the Salt and Vine, which is owned by Alan Jackson’s daughter Mattie. Childers says, “This is my got to place. Mattie is a certified sommelier and my husband and I love her selection of wine. We go there a lot and on occasion Alan is sitting at the bar.”
